Back to all places
Heybeliada, also known as Heybeli Ada or simply Heybeli, is the second largest of the nine so-called princely islands in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul. It is officially a neighborhood in the Adalar district of Istanbul.
The island is a popular destination for both tourists and locals looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, especially during the summer months. Here are some highlights of Heybeliada:
1. Halki Seminary: Also known as Halki School of Theology, this Eastern Orthodox seminary, closed to students since 1971, is located on top of a hill on the island. It is known for its beautiful architecture and great view of the surrounding sea and other islands.
2. Heybeliada Sanatorium: This historic building was a hospital for tuberculosis patients between 1924 and 2005. Although now abandoned, it is still an interesting place due to its architectural importance and historical significance.
3. Naval High School: Founded in 1773, it is the oldest naval academy in Turkey. Its building on Heybeliada, known as the "White Mansion", is an iconic landmark.
4. Beaches: The island has several beautiful beaches where you can swim or relax. Some of them are Aya Nikola Beach, Değirmenburnu and İnönü Beach.
5. Nature: Heybeliada is a great place for nature lovers. You can walk or rent a bicycle to explore the island's pine forests and beautiful landscapes.
6. Monasteries and Churches: The island has several religious sites, such as the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Monastery and the Aya Yorgi Church.
7. Local cuisine: Don't miss the opportunity to try delicious seafood and other local dishes at the island's restaurants.
Please note that cars are not allowed on the Prince's Islands, including Heybelia. You can get around the island on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage. To reach the island from Istanbul, you can take a ferry from either Kabataş or Bostancı Ferry Terminal. The trip usually takes about an hour.
