Topkapi Palace Museum

Home to the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, Topkapı Sarayı ("Palace of the Cannon Gate") was the primary residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman Empire, ruled by a monarch who lived within its vast complex, including the Harem, with many concubines, children, and servants.

Topkapı is one of Istanbul’s most visited attractions, second only to the Hagia Sophia. It is advisable to arrive early, especially to visit the Harem section, which requires a separate ticket and limits the number of visitors at one time.

Topkapı Palace Museum is open every day except Tuesday. The opening hours are generally 09:00 - 18:00 from mid-April to October, and 09:00 - 16:45 from November to mid-April. The museum usually remains open during Islamic holidays such as Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı, but it’s best to check official schedules during these times.

Ticket machines can be found in Sultanahmet Square and near the Topkapı ticket offices.

Visitors can explore the Harem by obtaining the separate ticket early to avoid waiting due to limited capacity.

After the Harem, visitors may stroll through the palace’s spacious grounds and its four courtyards. The church of Hagia Irene (Aya İrini) is located in the first courtyard.

Don’t miss the Imperial Treasury in the second courtyard, which houses incredible gems, gold, and works of art.
